Deeds Not Words 2020 - present
An ongoing project featuring women in protest. Images span the past five years; from the Covid 19 pandemic to the present.
This is a story of women's resistance. It spans a myriad of protest movements across the UK capturing women standing up for what they believe in, whether it be the climate crisis, Black Lives Matter, or opposition to compulsory vaccination, these women are using their voice and making a stand.
The project was inspired needless to say, by the fact that I am a women. I grew up in a hugely political, matriarchal, working class household where except for my step-father, even the cat was female. We were encouraged to stand up for ourselves, debate, and not accept anything but equality. The title of the project was directly inspired by the historical struggles women have faced.
In 1897 seventeen regional bodies under the umbrella of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, led by Millicent Fawcett, campaigned, and lobbied parliament for the vote for women.
Later, in 1903, tired of gaining no ground, Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Sylvia and Christabel set up a more radical Women's Social and Political Union that undertook direct action such as window smashing and arson.
The groups motto was " Deeds, Not Words" One hundred and twenty or so years later women are still taking the helm in a bid to enact change. As a life-long campaigner and activist, which grew from my formative years, I have a long history of attending protests and marches. As a photojournalist I document activism and communities, capturing the way individuals stand together and work together, highlighting the whole picture and effecting change. Combining an activist’s passion and photojournalists neutrality is complex. In these pictures, all taken between 2020-2022, my heart lies with the women acting, I state my allegiance, but at the same time I want to tell a rounded story and be a truthful witness.
